About

life is simpler in a small space
Living in a small space doesn't mean you have to give up entertaining. Instead of big dinner parties, I've shifted to drinks-and-appetizer parties. Depicted above is Round One of appetizers for twelve people.

Welcome to the Wonderful World of Downsizing!

Regardless of where you are in the process (and even if you’ve only just started thinking about downsizing), you’re probably thinking, "It doesn't sound so wonderful to me." And you're absolutely right! It’s NOT wonderful … until it’s over.

And then – VOILA! – it’s absolutely fabulous!

We make no claims that the process is easy. Quite the contrary: downsizing is difficult. But in almost every case we’ve come across or read about, it’s not only necessary, but it’s enlivening. The vast majority of those who’ve downsized are relieved and energized once it’s over.

The hardest part is deciding to do it!

I’d like to tell you why I started the site and what I hope the site accomplishes for people who are considering downsizing. (We also like to refer to the process as rightsizing – and encourage you to use that phrase, too.) Having downsized my life at age 60 by selling two houses (a spacious townhouse in Atlanta and a place on Hartwell Lake 100 miles outside Atlanta) and moving into a 1225-square-foot apartment in Arlington, Virginia, I wanted to share my experiences and help others through the process.

“I’ll write a book!” was my first thought.

But there are scores of books available on downsizing, rightsizing, and related topics – such as organizing, decluttering, “living small and tidy,” simplifying, reinventing your life, and the like. (DownsizeToday will have lists of and snippets from the best books on the market today related to the topic.)

Instead of merely adding to the number of books available, I decided to create a Downsizing Experts Resource Directory to help guide people who are downsizing to experts to guide them during all phases of the process: Realtors, professional organizers, de-cluttering experts, moving companies specializing in downsizing, estate sale experts, consignment shops, and charitable organizations who will take your “extra stuff” off your hands.

Additionally, DownsizeToday has a rich and robust content library encompassing the best and brightest thinking about the downsizing process.

  • Read stories and testimonials from downsizers and the people who helped them.
  • Visit the photo gallery for before-and-after photos from downsizers and “rightsizers.”
  • Learn tips and techniques to help you plan and successfully execute the process.
  • Hear from psychologists about the emotional aspects of letting go of sentimental items.

Downsizing is a trend that will intensify as the months and years go by.

Be a trendsetter! DownsizeToday.

All the best,

Patty P. Lundy
